We're counting down to Raising Our Storytelling Sights with Rance Greene on Wednesday, July 15 (12:00–1:30 PM) — and we want you to walk in already thinking like a storyteller.
If you haven't yet, register here: https://www.ccce.ca/events/ccce-virtual-event-raising-our-storytelling-sights
Rance is the author of Instructional Story Design and the founder of Need A Story. His whole approach rests on a deceptively simple idea: the stories that move people need just two things — a relatable character and strong conflict. He'll show us how that plays out not only in training, but in the everyday work of connecting, inspiring, and persuading the people around us.
To get the most out of the session, here are a few short pre-reads. None are required — but each will make the live conversation richer.
1. Start here — "Q&A with Instructional Story Design Author Rance Greene" (ATD): a friendly primer on Story Design and the two essential elements. https://www.td.org/content/press-release/q-a-with-instructional-story-design-author-rance-greene
2. Hear him think out loud — "Storytelling as a Learning Device" (Endurance Learning): why stories work, whether every topic needs one, and how to resist the urge to include every detail. https://endurancelearning.com/blog/storytelling-learning/
3. Explore his world — needastory.com: Rance's Story Design method, examples, and free resources. https://needastory.com
4. Go deeper, if you're hooked — Instructional Story Design: Develop Stories That Train (ATD Press). The case studies from Pizza Hut, Southwest Airlines, and PepsiCo are worth the price of admission.
And one thing to bring with you: think of a single workplace message you've struggled to land — a change you needed people to embrace, a behaviour you needed to shift. Hold two questions against it: Who is my audience? What do I want them to do? That's exactly where Rance will start.
See you on the 15th! Come ready to learn out loud.
