Reflect for a moment on the relationships you have had at your different workplaces. Some were likely good, making you feel at ease and wanting to give your best. It is also likely that some were not so good, where you felt on edge and performed at a lower level.
Relationships are at the heart of work, yet they aren’t always easy. The pressures of performance, outcomes, and the bottom line often mean we don’t connect in the ways we could. Various studies show high levels of disengagement at work. The acceleration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace only further adds to the complexity, challenging leaders to rediscover and reprioritise the human element.
The Human Field refers to the liminal, relational space between and around people at work. There is potential there to impact organisational performance - if you tend to it well. Take a look at the different types of relationships that exist at work, as well as the corresponding levels of trust and psychological safety. How would you map your work relationships?

Depending on where or how you mapped your relationships, you might be wondering how you could develop this human field. Four key elements shape it together, including intention, presence, listening, and awareness.

In sum, the quality of relationships at work matters. They shape the people and the overall organisational performance. They are worth investing in for the benefit of all.
